The Draft Picks are talking on the Chris Vernon Show right now.  It's good stuff.

The Champion of the BIU Voting Tournament is the number 3 seed, "Hiring Hubie Brown".  He edged out "Trading For Pau Gasol" by 2 votes.  Hubie helped orchestrate some much needed winning seasons, playoff runs, and great victories in Memphis during his tenure  He is very deserving of being named champ.  Thanks to everyone who voted, and let's hope for a great draft tonight!

You guys need to listen to this podcast. Around 15:30 they start talking about the Gasol trade and the implications it has had on Chris Wallace, this draft, and the future of the Grizz. Interesting stuff. The podcast is on the draft and it is good.  They talk about Rubio and Thabeet a lot.  This podcast took place yesterday before the Wizards trade so they don't discuss that.

Here are some things I can see happening if the Grizzlies draft Hasheem Thabeet.

1.      Chris Vernon will go insane.
2.      Grizzlies’ fans will go insane.
3.      Fans are going to hate Michael Heisley.
4.      Fans are going to lose faith in Chris Wallace.
5.      Marc Gasol…well who knows what we do with him.
6.      There will still be a hole at power forward.
7.      Thabeet will have an absurd amount of pressure on him to
        a.       Be a defensive force right from the get go
        b.      Develop an offensive in the next 15 months
        c.       Prove in the long run he was a better choice than Rubio or a trade
        d.      Win over the city that is pretty much already against him

Everyone out there is saying we are drafting Thabeet.  These are just a few things going through my head as we approach draft night.  All I know is that for this draft pick to work out, there is going to have to be many things that go perfectly.  So many things could go wrong with this decision.

Let’s say this happens.  Thabeet is rookie of the year, Mike Conley is an all-star point guard this season, and Darrell Arthur/Hakim Warrick is the answer at power forward.  That could happen, right?  Nope, that can’t happen. However, here is one way this could work out for us.  We draft Thabeet and he is at least a defensive presence in the lane (10 boards, 2 blocks).  We sign Carlos Boozer, and Mike Conley continues to progress as he did under Coach Hollins.  If all of these took place, I might not be so depressed.  I do not see this happening, but I can wish for it.  Either way, I am preparing myself for the worst on Thursday night.

We all know that the Grizzlies have made some terrible decisions throughout the franchise’s history.  It is depressing at times as I described in yesterday’s blog.  We are still the butt of many jokes.  My favorite columnist, Bill Simmons, gave us another shoutout today in his Kobe article.  So, I thought we needed a pick me up.  We need to feel good about the Grizzlies.  There is not always times to feel good, so I created one.  I thought how about we have a voting tournament for the best decisions made by the Grizzlies management.

I know there is going to be many disagreements on the list.  I am sure I left out something that people are going to think were great moves, and put in a decision that people hated.  The Grizzlies have made moves that have benefited us at the time they happened, or they benefited them in the future.  An example is the Pau trade.  Let’s take a look at the positives from that.  We have Marc Gasol, two first round picks, a lot more money, and we got rid of someone who did not want to be here.  Depending on who you ask this was a good move for the Grizzlies.  However, if you ask the majority it was ridiculously lopsided.  So, based on what this move could mean for the Grizzlies it made the list.  Let me know your suggestions for other decisions and hopefully we can work with it in the future.

This is how the tournament will work.  1 seed vs. 8, 2 vs. 7 ect.  There will be voting polls set up to the side of this blog and on the home page.  We will do one round at a time.  The polls will be open for approximately 3 days per round.  I will notify the readers when there is only an hour left to vote.  Whichever decision receives the most votes, will move onto the next round.  Their votes from the previous round will not carry over.  It will be a brand new poll.

We can't seem to get the bracket picture up so here are the seeds.  I wanted to go ahead and give the basics of these transactions.

1 seed- We trading Shareef and his $71 million contract extension for Pau Gasol’s draft rights, Brevin Knight, and Lorenzen Wright.

8 seed-We trading Pau Gasol for 2 first round picks, Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenon, the rights to Marc Gasol.

4 seed- We traded Shane Battier in 2006 for Rudy Gay and Stromile Swift.

5 seed- We traded Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins, and the rights to Kevin Love for O.J. Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, and Greg Buckner

3 seed- Hubie Brown was hired in 2002.  He helped the Grizzlies reach a then franchise record of 28 wins.  He guided the team to a playoff berth the next year with a record 50-32, and was named coach of the year in the NBA.

6 seed- We drafted Shareef Abdur-Rahim in the 1996 draft.  He was the leading scorer in his first year and was picked to the All-Rookie first team.  He had four straight 20 plus PPG years in a row before being traded.

2 seed- Jerry West was hired in 2002. He won the NBA Executive of the Year award in 2002.  He helped hire Hubie Brown, and he was an integral part in the Grizzlies getting to the playoffs.

7 seed- We hired Chris Wallace just before the 2007-2008 draft.  Since he has been here, we have traded one Gasol for another, obtained O.J. Mayo, drafted Mike Conley, and fired Marc Iavaroni.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR ALL 4 DECISIONS RIGHT NOW.

Let us know if you need something else Kobe.  Anyone else feel depressed seeing Pau Gasol hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy?  The Grizzlies' contribution to the Lakers' championship adds even more to the abundant amount of jokes that will come at the expense of the Memphis Grizzlies organization.  When the trade occured everyone thought we were basically just giving Pau away for nothing. The Lakers' win last night reminds everyone just not in Memphis, but in the NBA of that trade.  Yes, it provided a lot more than we expected orginally.  Still, the trade ended up with the Lakers winning the championship.  Kobe now has his championship without Shaq.  Phil has the record for most championships and can fill each of his fingers with a ring.  And Mitch Kupchak looks like a genius.  So, your welcome Los Angeles.

Did the Lakers get the benefit of the trade?  Obviously yes. Did we look like fools when it happened?  Yep.  Do we still look like fools?  Yea.  But, did the Grizzlies do better than we thought?  I think so.  Lets take a look at the positives.

1. We got the rights to Marc Gasol.  He has already established himself as a legit starting center in the league.

2. We cleared cap space.  We can contend in free agency and fill holes that we otherwise may not have been able to afford.

3. The first round picks. So what if it is going to be a late round pick. Remember, we are the Grizzlies and we have plenty of use for someone chosen in the latter part of the round.  Also, this pick may be packaged with something to move into the middle of the first.
