We all know that the Grizzlies have made some terrible decisions throughout the franchise’s history. It is depressing at times as I described in yesterday’s blog. We are still the butt of many jokes. My favorite columnist, Bill Simmons, gave us another shoutout today in his Kobe article. So, I thought we needed a pick me up. We need to feel good about the Grizzlies. There is not always times to feel good, so I created one. I thought how about we have a voting tournament for the best decisions made by the Grizzlies management.
I know there is going to be many disagreements on the list. I am sure I left out something that people are going to think were great moves, and put in a decision that people hated. The Grizzlies have made moves that have benefited us at the time they happened, or they benefited them in the future. An example is the Pau trade. Let’s take a look at the positives from that. We have Marc Gasol, two first round picks, a lot more money, and we got rid of someone who did not want to be here. Depending on who you ask this was a good move for the Grizzlies. However, if you ask the majority it was ridiculously lopsided. So, based on what this move could mean for the Grizzlies it made the list. Let me know your suggestions for other decisions and hopefully we can work with it in the future.
This is how the tournament will work. 1 seed vs. 8, 2 vs. 7 ect. There will be voting polls set up to the side of this blog and on the home page. We will do one round at a time. The polls will be open for approximately 3 days per round. I will notify the readers when there is only an hour left to vote. Whichever decision receives the most votes, will move onto the next round. Their votes from the previous round will not carry over. It will be a brand new poll.
We can't seem to get the bracket picture up so here are the seeds. I wanted to go ahead and give the basics of these transactions.
1 seed- We trading Shareef and his $71 million contract extension for Pau Gasol’s draft rights, Brevin Knight, and Lorenzen Wright.
8 seed-We trading Pau Gasol for 2 first round picks, Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenon, the rights to Marc Gasol.
4 seed- We traded Shane Battier in 2006 for Rudy Gay and Stromile Swift.
5 seed- We traded Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins, and the rights to Kevin Love for O.J. Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, and Greg Buckner
3 seed- Hubie Brown was hired in 2002. He helped the Grizzlies reach a then franchise record of 28 wins. He guided the team to a playoff berth the next year with a record 50-32, and was named coach of the year in the NBA.
6 seed- We drafted Shareef Abdur-Rahim in the 1996 draft. He was the leading scorer in his first year and was picked to the All-Rookie first team. He had four straight 20 plus PPG years in a row before being traded.
2 seed- Jerry West was hired in 2002. He won the NBA Executive of the Year award in 2002. He helped hire Hubie Brown, and he was an integral part in the Grizzlies getting to the playoffs.
7 seed- We hired Chris Wallace just before the 2007-2008 draft. Since he has been here, we have traded one Gasol for another, obtained O.J. Mayo, drafted Mike Conley, and fired Marc Iavaroni.
DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR ALL 4 DECISIONS RIGHT NOW.
